The “I’m DYING For A Copy Of PULPHOPE” Post Of The Day

25 July, 2007 (18:10) | Art, Comics | By: Loris Z.

Paul Pope, interviewed at Wizard:

it’s also partly like putting the young cartoonist in me to bed. That’s what that whole essay about being 35 years old is, because you just reach this point.…Earlier on, when I was first breaking into this industry, the real exciting part was getting to meet Steve Rude or getting a book signed by Chester Brown, that kind of stuff, and hanging out with whoever. Then you do it, and you reach a point where you get a sense that the people you’ve admired, whether that’s [Frank] Miller or [Mike] Mignola or Moebius, they are aware of you and there’s a certain level of respect that they have for you as a young guy. Then you reach a point of, “Okay, now what? I’ve seen my stuff in print. I’ve worked in superheroes. I’ve worked in indie. So now what?” This was hopefully a chance to make a definitive break for the next 35 years. That’s the deep purpose. That’s the depth-charge purpose.

Table Prop In The Works

24 July, 2007 (05:17) | The Process | By: Loris Z.

Table prop in the works, originally uploaded by lorisz.

This is a table prop that I’ve remade for a con that we’re attending next month. It was a display for a 500 anniversary edition of The Quixote that I could take home and mutilate. The original drawing was one of my Bird Mans (plenty of them in the illustration gallery), I think I may have a photo laying around somewhere, I’ll see if I can post it tomorrow. I couldn’t take pictures of the whole process, the camera wasn’t home, and I would have been interesting, because, as simple as it looks, it was a lot of work to do.

I started by destroying the previous drawing. Ripped out all the pulp paper that made the base, tried to clean it as best as possible. After that, I gave it around six layers of red gouache (bodycolor, people). After that I glued two sheets of bristol on it. I did that because the paper was sturdy enough to take the beating I was planning without breaking. Painted around of four layers with red acrylic. When it dried, I put two layers of white paint defining the shape of the character (the Masked Man from “Persona”. Has no name). Added a couple more layers of white to polish it a little, defined the blacks in the figure, and presto!

It still isn’t finished. The black circle in the right part will include the NK logo, and on the left part a little plastic window will be glued to allow our minicomics to be exhibited there.

I’ll probably make a set of photos showing details of it once it’s fully finished. I like how it’s coming out.

Back to the board. Lots to draw.
